 Two nitrogen atoms can form either one, two, or three bonds between them, depending on the chemical species in question.


In the case of nitrogen gas (N2), two nitrogen atoms form a triple bond, which is composed of three covalent bonds. This results in a highly stable, non-reactive molecule that makes up about 78% of the Earth's atmosphere.


In other nitrogen-containing molecules, such as nitric oxide (NO) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2), two nitrogen atoms form either a double bond or a single bond, respectively.
